  1. Automatic list item formatting (like Notational Velocity)

When editing a list, such as:

    • Item 1
    • Item 2
    • Item 3

If the cursor is positioned at the end of a list item, and you hit return, Metanota should assume you're adding a new list item and automatically add "- " before your cursor.

This is how Notational Velocity works and it saves a lot of keystrokes when editing lists in notes.

    Thank you.

  2. Add basic font/size preferences

    Hello,

I'd like to suggest that Metanota provide basic font preferences for all notes.

I'm not suggesting any rich-text capabilities here - just a single, application-wide setting to at least control the font family and size for viewing/editing all notes in the application.

By comparison, Notational Velocity can do this; it provides the following settings in application preferences:

    • Foreground text color
    • Background text color
    • Font family
    • Font size

Thanks for considering this. I'm really enjoying Metanota.

    Regards,
    Dave

  4. Password Protect MetaNota

MetaNota has been been default go to app for note taking these days. I have been storing all my ideas and journal entries in it.

What would be great is if I could password protect the app, so that MetaNota asks me for a password each time I open the software.

  5. New "Pro" feature: Smart Folders (multi-criteria search)

Here's an suggestion for Metanota Pro:

    • Provide a simple way for users to search notes by multiple folders/tags and date criteria.

      • Provide a way to save and name those searches.
      • Add a section to the folders pane of Metanota called "Smart Folders" under which all saved searches appear.

Then, the user could have easy access to smart folders that list all notes that match multiple criteria according to their needs.

For me, an example of a useful smart folder would be:

    • Show ALL notes where folder IS "Work" AND folder IS "Website"

And even more useful with the ability to…

  6. Export as a text file

It is a bother to copy & past from metanota to a text editor and save it.
it would be great to be able to export.

  7. Make URLs live clickable links in a note

Unless I've missed it would be nice to have URLs as clickable links in a note - similar to Simplenote on iOS or JustNotes on the Mac.

  8. A writing only mode

I would like to be able to enter a "writing only" mode where the only thing I see is the note editing portion of the 3 panes. This way I'm not distracted by folders, or anything else and I can simply focus on writing content.

  9. Share notes with friends and students

I recently discovered Metanota tool and I'm very inclined to leave nvAlt. It would be wonderful to share notes with friends and students, both in its original format or in markdown format, without using simplenote site to do it. Also the simplenote preview via browser by markdown is corrupted, leaving margins for new ideas for embedded youtube videos in Metanota site preview.

  10. Display more than one (configurable) preview lines in the notes list

Like, you know, most other Simplenotes app out there :-p
And in particular the iOS app

  12. Access local folders

I'd like to be able to work with local folders.. then I could sync with Dropbox. This would be a good solution for working with iPad programs such as Notesy which support folders?

  13. Add tags

Tags should be kept separate from the concept of folders. I like the folders, but would like tags that are not folders.

  14. New Feature: Option to hide notes via tag/folder(s)

I've been using Simplenote for a long time, so I have quite a lot of notes. As a result, the notes list in Metanota is cluttered. It would be a better user experience for me if I could get certain notes "out of sight, out of mind".

To me, an excellent "pro user" feature would be the ability to automatically hide all notes that contain a given simplenote tag.

The way I envision the feature:

    • Provide an optional preference field where the user could specify one or more Simplenote tags as their "archived note folder(s)".

      • Then, the note list pane…

Nice idea ! I’ll consider a way to implement it “cross-providers”, as starting with 2.0 Metanota will support other notes “cloud” providers too.

  16. Global keyboard shortcut to create new note

A global keyboard shortcut to popup a new note entry window. Pressing this key combination would be available whether or not Metanota was in focus or not.

  17. Syntax Highlighting

Metanota supports the ability for code blocks via 4 spaces or tab. It would be nice if it also allowed 'fenced code blocks'. Quite a number of other markdown apps support this along with syntax highlighting. There are a number of libraries out there that can be integrated into Metanota to provide the syntax highlighting.

Fenced code blocks work by opening and closing a code block with 3 backticks. For example:

    var n = function() {
      console.log('Metanota is sweet!');
    }

The opening backticks are followed by the expected code language. This would be a nice-to-have, but certainly is not necessary.

  19. Create a shortcut for show/hide Metanota and another shortcut for new note.

This is customizable in Notational Velocity and pretty time-saving.

  20. Import RTF or Txt formats

It would be great to be able to drag an RTF? or a plain text file onto Metanota or the sidebar and for it to create a new note using either the filename or the first line (up to the first newline char) as the title.
